Media Interviews: Sharing the Spotlight

In a perfect world, each of your media interviews would be an exclusive one-on-one between you and a skilled journalist. Every question would be reasonable, every answer perfectly polished, and every discussion a marvelous opportunity to share your company message.

However, you may be asked to participate in a panel interview with a variety of experts. Should you choose to participate in such an interview, you will need to learn how to share the spotlight comfortably. These guidelines will help you look your best.

Play Nice

A media interview that includes debate and opposition creates a more engaging viewing experience. While presenting a variety of viewpoints can be entertaining, it can also be rife with biting queries sure to set off some fireworks to help boost ratings.

The sooner you can establish your platform, the better. Do not allow yourself to be baited into a debate or show irritation toward the other guests – even if you disagree vehemently. Most of all, be polite to the host; the audience tuned in because they like the show or the host, and being rude will ensure that you're not invited back.

Share the Spotlight

If you talk over everyone else, frequently interrupt, or otherwise attempt to dominate the interview, it won’t just be the journalist who becomes frustrated with you. The audience will too. Thoughtfully answer questions, but allow others the opportunity to do so as well. Time will fly when many people are involved. That 5-minute segment may only provide you with 60 seconds of airtime. Move fast and get your point of view out quickly.

Don’t Let Others Run the Show 

While you don’t want to hog the spotlight, you also don’t want to sit back and say nothing the entire time you’re there. It’s a balancing act – one that requires you to be familiar, comfortable, and practiced with your talking points, so that when the opportunity arises for you to speak up, you can do so.

Whether you’re being interviewed on your own or sharing the spotlight with other guests, it can be a great opportunity to share your message and develop your public speaking skills. Good guests are often invited back regularly, providing the opportunity to build strong credibility as an expert in your industry.
